Mathematics
At Langwith Bassett Primary, we want every child to develop a positive and confident attitude towards mathematics. Our mathematics curriculum gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make sense of the world around them, solve problems and think logically. We aim to nurture curiosity and help children recognise how mathematics is used in everyday life and across a wide range of subjects and experiences.
Our lessons are carefully planned and build progressively on what children already know following the White Rose Maths Scheme. Through high-quality teaching, children are given opportunities to explore mathematical ideas, make connections and apply their learning in different contexts. We provide appropriate support and challenge so that every pupil can participate fully, develop their understanding and make strong progress.
Fluency is an important part of our mathematics teaching. Children develop a secure understanding of number and learn to recall key facts efficiently, allowing them to use their knowledge confidently when tackling increasingly demanding tasks. Alongside fluency, we place a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving. Pupils are encouraged to think carefully, choose appropriate strategies, explain their methods and learn from mistakes.
As children progress through the school, they develop the confidence to break down complex problems into manageable steps and persevere when solutions are not immediately obvious. They learn to spot patterns, make connections, identify relationships and use mathematical language to explain and justify their thinking.
Our ambition is for every child at Langwith Bassett Primary to leave us as a capable and resilient mathematician who can apply their learning confidently, reason clearly and approach new mathematical challenges with curiosity and determination.

This year, in EYFS and Key Stage 1, we are using Mastering Number to help children build a strong foundation in early maths by developing their understanding of number, counting, and relationships between numbers. This is to help children develop confidence and fluency with numbers through fun, practical activities that strengthen their sense of number and prepare them for future maths learning. Pupils take part in short, engaging sessions outside of the main maths lesson in Year 1 and Year 2 that help them understand numbers deeply, spot patterns, and explain their mathematical thinking with confidence. In reception, this will be used to teach daily maths.

This year, our Year 3 - Year 5 children will also be taking part in the Mastering Number at Key Stage 2 programme. The programme will support children in developing a deeper understanding of number, strengthening their mathematical fluency and building confidence with multiplication and related facts. Through regular, engaging practice, pupils will develop greater flexibility in their mathematical thinking and become increasingly confident when applying their knowledge to solve problems.
At our school, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a carefully structured approach to help children build strong number sense, and a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts. Through the White Rose Maths curriculum, pupils learn to understand, explain, and enjoy mathematics — progressing from concrete experiences to pictorial and abstract thinking as they move through the school. It is a programme that helps children build a deep understanding of maths through small, carefully planned steps, encouraging reasoning, problem-solving, and confidence.
