Art & Design
At Langwith Bassett Junior Academy, we believe that Art and Design is a vital part of every child's education. Our curriculum inspires pupils to be creative, curious and confident artists while providing opportunities to express their ideas, thoughts and emotions through a wide range of artistic experiences. Wherever possible, we make meaningful links across the curriculum, allowing children to use art as a way of exploring and enhancing their learning in other subjects.
Through our Art and Design curriculum, pupils are encouraged to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We provide opportunities for children to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing, textiles and digital art, whilst exploring colour, pattern, texture, form and shape. As they progress through school, pupils are taught to think critically about art and develop an understanding of how artists, designers and craftspeople reflect and influence the world around them.
We aim to foster creativity, independence, resilience and self-reflection, enabling pupils to take pride in their work and develop confidence in their artistic abilities. Children study a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers from different periods, cultures and backgrounds, helping them to appreciate the rich contribution that art makes to society, culture and history. Through exploring both historical and contemporary artists, pupils gain an understanding of how art can communicate ideas, celebrate identity and inspire change.
Our intent is for every child to leave Langwith Bassett with a love of creativity, a secure knowledge of artistic techniques and processes, and the confidence to express themselves imaginatively while appreciating the artistic achievements of others.
