The DfE has reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation in all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

• Respect for democracy and the democratic process,
• Respect for the law,
• Support for equality of opportunity for all,
• Support and respect for the liberties of all,
• Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religions.

We demonstrate this in the following ways:

• Our School Council is made up of pupils from Reception to Year 6, and they are selected through a whole school vote. They are actively involved in decision-making throughout the school, including the selection of new staff, purchasing of new furniture and activities for all our children to be involved in before, after and during school hours.
• Children are encouraged to express their individual opinions and ideas in relation to the running of the school and are given the opportunity to debate topics with their peers both in lessons and out.
• Pupil questionnaires allow the children to put any ideas, concerns or suggestions to the student council and also demonstrate their active participation in the democratic process.
• Democracy also forms a part of our curriculum. 

Rule of Law

• Our school sets out clear, fair and achievable behaviour expectations which are regularly promoted throughout the school. Pupils are always encouraged to make the right decision and to take control of their own behaviour.
• Pupils’ positive behaviour is praised and celebrated both in class and in our Reward assembly.
• Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors actively promote positive relationships and a zero tolerance for aggression or violence towards any of our staff or pupils.
   

Individual Liberty

• Individual choice and decision within school allows children to develop their confidence, self-esteem and understanding.
• PSHE lessons contribute to discussion-based learning and provide our pupils with the opportunity to safely exercise their rights and personal freedoms.
• Linked into our Anti-Bullying policy and Ambassador programme, Langwith Bassett has a positive culture surrounding support for vulnerable pupils.
   

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

• We believe that respect for others is a vital component of moral development. Pupils are actively encouraged to behave respectfully and treat the opinions and views of others with respect, even if they differ from their own.
• We follow the scheme of RE Today, which provides children with experiences of other cultures and beliefs and the opportunity to reflect on their own beliefs.
• We encourage all our children to understand that they have rights and responsibilities as citizens in our school and wider community.
